Colin McGrath Says Landowners Must Maintain Cleanliness.
South Down MLA Colin McGrath (SDLP) has stressed the need for landowners to maintain a regular upkeep of premises.
The Assemblyman said: “I have received a number of concerns raised by constituents over a number of key areas in the Downpatrick area recently in which bins have been allowed to overflow which has created real issues of hygiene.
“One of these has been at Inch Abbey. I welcome news from the Historic Environment Division who have responsibility for this site that as they are presently unable to empty their bins due to the COVID-19 pandemic they have worked constructively with Newry Mourne & Down council who have been able to accommodate this matter on this occasion.
“I have also reported overflowing bins at the Omniplex Cinema site to the owners and hope for this to be completed as soon as possible.
“What is really disappointing is that even though Omniplex is closed some members of the public continue to use this bin as a means of disposal.
“This is also happening at Inch Abbey as it is being used for the disposal of items such as a portable barbecue. I really do appeal to the small minority of people who are continuing this practice and discarding of these materials to cease and to make use of our household recycling centres now that they are open again.
“Again, I stress, the only way we are going to beat this COVID-19 pandemic is if everyone plays their role and does their bit. For the most part we are doing this and I applaud everyone who has made such sacrifices over the last few months.
“We just need that last bit of buy-in from that small minority of the public to get the message and play their role.”
