NI Water joins with Water Aid and local companies to support many people in the Third World do not have flush toilets and adequate sanitation
Thomas Crapper (1836-1910), and English plumber, may have invented the flush toilet and other improvements to ‘the closet’, but his inventions certainly have not been rolled out across the planet.
But can more be done to address the global sanitation crisis, an issue posed by the UN to mark World Toilet Day on the 19th November. The UN aims to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve sanitation for all by 2030.
NI Water supports WaterAid to show that a toilet is not just a toilet… it is a life-saver, dignity-protector and opportunity-maker.
World Toilet Day is an opportunity to influence decision makers and raise awareness that there are still 1.7 billion people living without a decent toilet of their own. Living without a safe toilet threatens the health, education and livelihood of billions of people. Everyone everywhere has the right to sanitation, but progress on achieving this is very slow.
A NI Water spokesperson said: “NI Water is proud to lead the local WaterAid NI Committee, raising £34,230 at a recent virtual fundraising ball. This will go a long way in helping bring clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to health centres in Machinga and Zomba districts of Malawi, where the Deliver Life project is based.
“Within the four healthcare centres in this project, these funds are helping to introduce a variety of facilities such as solar-powered piped water supply systems, inclusive bathrooms and other sanitary facilities.
“NI Water offers a huge thank you to all its sponsors and supporters for raising this fantastic total.
“NI Water will join WaterAid and Water Companies from across the UK to host a World Toilet Day Live event for primary schools to support WaterAid’s vision of a world where everyone, everywhere has access to safe water, decent sanitation and good hygiene.”
