New Walking Tour Launched in Newry
As summer is on its way, it’s time to discover an exciting new walking tour in Newry where you can explore the City’s rich history and culture.
The Story of Newry walking tour is a new experience that offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to find out more about the historic City. The tour was developed in partnership with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Tourism NI and Newry Bid to create innovative tourism experiences within the City to increase its tourism offering and visitor spend.
Led by experienced local guide, Sinead Rice McAleavy, the walking tour takes visitors on a journey through time, exploring the landmarks and hidden gems of the City to uncover the stories that shaped its past and present.
Sinead is an experienced storyteller and is passionate about Newry and its heritage, skilled at bringing the City’s stories to life with her fascinating anecdotes and insights.
The tour is also designed to be an immersive and interactive experience, and visitors are encouraged to ask questions, share their own knowledge to engage with the City’s history and culture in a meaningful way.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Tourism NI and Newry BID to launch the Story of Newry walking tour, which we hope will inspire visitors to explore the City and its history.”

The tour covers a variety of landmarks and historical sites, including the impressive Newry Cathedral, the 18th-century Newry Canal, and the bustling Newry Market. Visitors will also learn about the City’s role in the shipping industry.

The Story of Newry walking tour is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, with the route carefully planned to ensure maximum accessibility and comfort for visitors.
Tours are available on Wednesday and Saturday at 11am from June to September meeting at Newry Town Hall.
