August Toremans’ Collection Donated to Newry and Mourne Museum
An important collection of artefacts reflecting the life and work of August Toremans have been donated to Newry and Mourne Museum by the musician’s daughters Dympna and Urbanie.
The donation was facilitated by Declan McConaghy, who, recognising the significance of the collection introduced the sisters to museum staff.
Monsieur Toremans, who was born in Belgium, studied at the famous Lemmens Institute, a church music school in Mechelen. He came to Newry in 1951 after responding to an advertisement for an organist and choirmaster in Newry Cathedral, where he spent 21 years, before later moving to St. Catherine’s Dominican Church in 1980, where he remained for the rest of his career.
On arrival to Newry, he immediately became involved in the musical life of the town, becoming the musical director of Newry Musical Society from 1952 until 1995, winning many prizes and certificates of merit at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera for his musical direction.
He taught many generations of students in local schools and was involved in their musical productions, often in the role of musician and conductor. During his 43 years living in Newry, his contribution to sacred music, education, light opera and musical theatre was immense.
Commentating on the donation, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said: “We are indebted to the family of August Toremans, for their generosity in donating these wonderful artefacts to the museum.
“August Toremans made a lasting impact on the people of Newry, playing a key role in their lives through church celebrations, as a music teacher and through his role in local stage productions. I am delighted his legacy will be preserved for future generations”.
The donation consists of music books, vocal scores, posters and programmes relating to Monsieur Toremans’ work in Newry and other societies outside the area.
