A man has died and another is seriously ill following a house fire in Cloughoge in Newry.
The death of a man in a house fire at Park Vew, Cloughoge, in Newry has shocked the community. Another man is seriously ill due to smoke inhalation.
Police were alerted to the blaze at a house in Park View, Cloughoge, at around 11.40pm by the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) who were in attendance. Police and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) also attended the scene.
NIFRS reported they had recovered two men from the property, one of whom was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The second man was taken to hospital by the NIAS where he remains in a critical condition.
Police have confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been conducted on the man who died following the house fire and it was concluded that the man died as a result of smoke inhalation. The second man was taken to hospital by the NIAS where he remains in a critical but stable condition also suffering from smoke inhalation.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that 62 year old Jimmy Thompson died due to smoke inhalation.”
Detective Inspector Handley said: “An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, and our officers have been in the area conducting enquiries. We would appeal to anyone with information they believe may assist our investigation to call us.”

Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has espressed her condolences following the death of a man in a house fire in Cloughouge.
The MLA said: “The local Cloughouge community are in shock today at the news of teh Friday night house fire at Park View, which has claimed the life of a man and left another person injured.
“This fire was a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and sympathy are with the family and friends of the man who has lost his life. We hope that the person injured will make a full recovery
“I would also like to express our deep gratitude to the emergency services who responded to last night’s fire.
“The PSNI and forensics remain at the scene”.
Ulster Unionist Councillor David Taylor has described the death of a man in a house fire in the Cloughoge area outside Newry as a very tragic incident.
He said:
“The death of a man in the house fire which occurred in the Cloughoge area outside Newry is a very tragic incident.
“I want to offer my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased man at this extremely difficult time.
“Another man who was also in the house at the time of the fire is critically ill in hospital and I sincerely hope he can make a full recovery from his injuries.
“The Police investigation into the fire is ongoing and I would appeal to anyone with information that would assist the PSNI with their enquiries to report it immediately.”
