South Down MLAs shocked at Newcastle sword attack
South Down MLAs have been quick to condemn the sword attack which happened at a house in Ballageg Park area in Newcastle.
A police spokesperson said detectives investigating a report of an assault at a property in Newcastle in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 21st July, have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder and a number of other offences.
Detective Inspector Johnston said: “Officers attended a report of a man having been assaulted by another man with what is believed to have been a sword, at a house in the Ballaghbeg Park area of the town shortly before 3.45am.
“The victim sustained facial injuries and a severe arm injury during the incident, and it was also reported that he was hit on the head repeatedly with an object.
“The victim was subsequently taken to hospital for medical treatment by colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.
“A man aged in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and possessing an article with a blade or point in public place.
“He remains in police custody at this time, assisting with enquiries.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are appealing to anyone who may have any information which might assist, or who witnessed what happened, to get in touch with us.

McGrath says information important to help police with sword attack investigation
SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath has urged anyone with information on an overnight sword attack in Newcastle to contact the PSNI.
Mr McGrath said: “The fact that someone had access to a sword and then used it for an assault is worrying and unacceptable. I hope that the person injured recovers quickly.
“I would ask anyone with any information about the incident to contact the police. Such information is critical to ensure such an incident doesn’t occur again.
“Newcastle is a peaceful and tourist-driven area and this behaviour is unacceptable and not reflective of the community here.”
McMurray condemns sword attack in Newcastle
South Down MLA Andrew McMurray has condemned an attack involving a sword that occurred at a house in the Ballaghbeg Park area of Newcastle in County Down during the early hours of this morning (21 July), calling the behaviour of the individual responsible “completely unacceptable”.
Andrew McMurray said that it has been reported that a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after being involved in a sword attack.
The victim of the attack has been taken to hospital to be treated after sustaining facial injuries and severe arm injuries.
He said: “This is a truly horrific incident and the individual responsible must be held accountable for their actions. My thoughts are with the victim of the attack, who I wish a speedy and full recovery.
“It is concerning that someone had access to such a lethal weapon.
“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and there is absolutely no place for it within our community.
“Newcastle is a peaceful and welcoming town, and this incident does not reflect the values of those living there.
“I would urge anyone that has any information that may be helpful to police in their investigation to please get in touch with them as soon as possible.”
