Newcastle Bowling Green Officially Opens
After a lull of over two years, bowlers in Newcastle are now enjoying a brand new facility.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Casey officially opened the new Newcastle Bowling Green on Friday 23 August. Local councillors, council officials and members of the local bowling clubs of Newcastle Bowling Club, Newcastle Ladies Bowling Club, and Castlepark Bowling Club all came together to celebrate the long-awaited construction of the new bowling pavilion.
Councillor Charlie Casey said: “This new pavilion will provide the opportunity to raise the profile of bowling in the district. It also aims to raise the levels of health and well-being of all our citizens both in this district and further afield.”
“As a Council we have been determined to improve the health and wellbeing of all our citizens and, to that end, are working to provide modern, attractive and fit-for-purpose facilities.
“This fantastic facility shows how our Sports Strategy works for local sport and reinforces our commitment to delivering quality facilities for our communities. Hopefully this will encourage new participants to take up bowling and ‘Be Active’.”
The creation of a new pavilion was identified as an urgent priority in the Council’s Sports Facility Strategy and was fully funded by Council, with the work carried out by Maghera Developments.
The new pavilion is located in the Castle Park area of Newcastle, with stunning views of the Mournes and will provide perfect hub for bowling in the area.
The clubs at the new pavilion will now be looking forward to securing new indoor bowling mats to ensure that they can enjoy their bowling all year round.
