SDLP Council Candidate Mark Murnin has called for the Rivers Agency to carry out essential repairs to the bridge in the centre of Drumaness village.
He said: “The river has been partially blocked by a build-up of stones and gravel for some considerable time, and this has diverted the flow to one side of the bridge which has caused damage to the central buttress. This has resulted in a large stone being removed. Structural engineers will need to assess this damage and make the necessary repairs before it gets worse and possibly dangerous.
“The river bed will also need to be cleared and the buttress repaired to prevent further damage”, Mr Murnin said, adding: “It is quite clear the recent weather we have been experiencing has led to large volumes of fast moving water creating this problem. Perhaps there will be an opportunity to repair this in the summer months.”
Outgoing Ballynahinch Councillor Anne McAleenan also supported Mr Murnin saying: “Because of recent flooding in the area, it is important that our waterways are kept free-flowing to lessen future problems in Drumaness.”
