We must preserve our natural world for future generations says McMurray
Alliance South Down MLA Andrew McMurray has commended the work done by the local National Trust, and reaffirmed his commitment to preserving and regenerating South Down’s natural environment.
He spoke following a meeting with Victoria Magreehan and Patrick Lynch at Thomas’ Quarry, Slieve Donard.
Mr McMurray has said: “It was great to have the opportunity to meet with the National Trust and learn about current issues affecting Slieve Donard and the wider area.
“And I heard first-hand about the work that has gone into helping protect this landscape and its special habitats, while also accommodating access to these areas, is incredibly important.
“After the great environmental regeneration efforts that took place at this iconic landmark following the devastating wildfires in 2021, it was interesting to hear about the various measures that are being taken to increase resilience and prevent future wildfires, and the different strategies and techniques used to help the flora and fauna reestablish themselves after the fires.
“The scars of the wildfires are still clearly visible, but it was heartening to see that the area is beginning to recover due to these efforts.
“I’d also commend the National Trust for their inter-agency work within the ‘Forever Mournes Partnership’. It’s reassuring that the preservation of the landscape for future generations remains a key priority.
“However, it is not just the upland areas which the National Trust has a remit in looking after. The South Down coast is also an integral piece of our landscape, and there are going to be challenges both in how it is looked after and how we manage our interaction with it.
“Whilst Ministers and Stormont Departments have acknowledged the importance of preserving and regenerating our landscape, and local organisations are clearly doing great work, I will continue raising the issues as highlighted to me in order to ensure from the sea to summit is looked after in the years ahead.”
