McGrath Welcomes Food Parcels For Needy

McGrath Welcomes Food Parcel Scheme.

The SDLP’s South Down MLA Colin McGrath has welcomed news that the Northern Ireland Executive has committed to providing over 10,000 homes with a weekly food parcel.

Mr McGrath said: “The scheme announced by the NI Executive will be a tremendous help to so many people across the North and is one I wholeheartedly welcome and thank the Minister for Communities for her work in bringing this to fruition.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath.

“This support package will provide much needed relief for some of the most vulnerable in our society and will be of particular benefit to those who are having to self isolate at this time.

“In my constituency I see on a regular basis how much of a benefit local food banks are to so many in our community and I have no doubt this scheme will relieve some of the pressure the food banks are facing as this scheme alone will amount to some £10 million.

“I understand the Department is also now working with the Department for Health to examine ways in which prescription medication can be delivered directly to those who are vulnerable and in need.

“Further to this a support package will be in place for those who would have availed of free school meals during term time.  This is to be welcomed and will ensure none of our children suffer from any form of ‘holiday hunger’. This is a prime illustration that our departments cannot operate as individual silos but rather need to work cooperatively and must complement each other in the work that they do.

“I would urge anyone within the constituency who is in need to reach out to the people around them and know that my offices remain open for anyone who is in need,” added Mr McGrath.
