McGrath Says DAERA Must Re-Open Quoile Centre

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath calls for Minister Muir to re-open the Quoile Centre in Downpatrick

South Down MLA Colin McGrath has called on the Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir to consider a suite of options to ensure the re-opening of the Quoile Countryside Centre.

Commenting, the South Down MLA has said: “The Quoile Countryside Centre was a remarkable centre as a hub for those visiting the Quoile Pondage Nature Reserve.

“However, it has been temporarily closed for a number of years now, with no indication as to when it would reopen.

“I have tabled a series of questions to the Agriculture Minister to ask:

  • why it was closed; what the department is spending on its closure;
  • what consultation was undertaken;
  • what is the impact of its closure on wider tourism for South Down;
  • and if the Minister will consider finding an alternative operator for the site.

“Having it remain closed indefinitely is simply not a viable option.

“I have been working to see improvements to the Quoile River area, and the reopening of the Centre is an integral part of this work.

“While there are many nature reserves around the North, the Lecale Way is truly one of the most beautiful and historic.

“The trail around the Centre takes in a tremendous amount of scenic beauty and historic architecture, and having this Centre continually closed makes absolutely no sense.

“I hope the Minister, personally, gives the necessary consideration to these questions.

“As an advocate of Alliance’s pursuit of a green economy, I would think this would be a key priority for him.

“I will continue to make this case to DAERA, and engage with our local agencies to ensure we see this heritage centre re-opened without any further delay.”
