SDLP MLA Colin McGrath has said that Northern Ireland desperately needs a dedicated unit that deals with the issue of eating disorders.
Mr McGrath added: “In this modern 21st century with so much emphasis on personal identity, some in our community are struggling with theirs and in extreme cases they sometimes develop eating disorders.
“Such disorders can be very distressing and also life threatening, and for the sufferer and their families they can present one of the most traumatic and frightening medical experiences in their lives.
“The fact that specialist help is not easily accessible is an added blow to those suffering these conditions.
“I am writing to the Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health to ask for a review of the current provision and to ask that a specialist dedicated unit be opened to prevent those with the conditions having to travel to England and farther afield for help and assistance.
“If the numbers aren’t enough in Northern Ireland I would suggest that an all-island provision be explored.
“We must help the most vulnerable in our society and we must equip them and their families with as much support as possible. A dedicated unit would transform the provision here in Northern Ireland and positively enhance the outcomes for those suffering.”
Trust Explains Treatment For Adults With Eating Disorders
A spokesperson South Eastern Health and Social care Trust said: ” All patients referred to Mental Health Services are assessed within the Trust’s Mental Health Assessment Centre (MHAC).
“At the MHAC the patient’s needs are identified and the appropriate clinical pathway is determined. Where a patient requires care and treatment for an Eating Disorder, a number of options will be considered.
“The Adult Eating Disorders Team is based in Belfast Trust but also serves people from the South Eastern Trust area, works within a stepped model of care.
“The team delivers care and treatment to people with severe, enduring and complex eating disorders. They provide regular advice, guidance and supervision to the other steps of service that provide service to mild to moderate eating disorders including CMHT (Community Mental health Trust) and psychology.  This ensures timely and early intervention.
“The team consists of: a Consultant, Psychiatrist, Speciality Doctor, 6 Therapists, 1 dietitian, 2 nurse practitioners, OT and a Health Care Assistant.
“Unfortunately our current information systems do not allow for a presentation of statistical information relating to patients who have attended services with mild to moderate eating disorder problems, however, the following activity data demonstrates the demand upon the Adult Eating Disorder Team and the requirement for medical and psychiatric admission.
