Slieve Croob Sinn Fein Councillor Cathy Mason has welcomed Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s commitment to make safe a green space in Drumaness.
The Sinn Féin representative said she was “very happy” to receive confirmation that after lobbying council they have agreed to flatten and make the green space safe writes Laura Barr.
She added: “The area in question is known locally as ‘the back field’, and a number of years ago there used to be a playpark there.
“Now that Drumaness has two playparks, one of which has recently been upgraded, the clearing away of the remnants of bricks and concrete was well overdue.
“The area will be flattened and seeded so it can be safely used, and a set of GAA nets and soccer nets will be installed.”
Cllr Mason added: “We all know how vital it is to get outside into the fresh air, especially our young people, and especially during these unprecedented times.
“Not only for our physical health but also our mental wellbeing.
“A number of residents have contacted me, delighted with the announcement and with further ideas of how to utilise these spaces.”
Cllr Mason said she will continue to make representations to council on resident’s behalf.
