The Independent Slieve Croob Councillor Patrick Clarke has written to the Director of Active and Healthy Communities regarding a lack of outdoor play facilities in Clanvaraghan village.
Councillor Clarke who has been contacted by local parents has requested Newry Mourne and Down District Council to assist in the provision of outdoor play facilities in Clanvaraghan village. He said: “Following concerns raised with me by some local parents in Clanvaraghan I have now made written representations to the Director of Active and Healthy Communities in regards to Newry Mourne and Down District Council assisting in the provision of outdoor play facilities in Clanvaraghan village.
“Currently there are no outdoor play facilities for children in Clanvaraghan village. The number of young children has increased significantly in recent years and there is support in the local community for the provision of a play area with local residents identifying new outdoor play facilities as the number one need for the village in the Clanvaraghan village plan completed back in 2012.
“A site had been previously identified for a play area in the green space area at the top of Slievehanny Park and was identified following extensive work by the local community to find a site which is appropriate, feasible and available. The developer had also agreed to provide it for a play area. This included consideration of all the possible locations identified in the village survey.
“Since 2012 there has been no out-door play facilities developed yet in Clanvaraghan village.”
