Hazzard welcomes NI Water investigation into sewage overspill on Saul Road
South Down Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard has called on NI Water to investigate concerns of sewage overspill coming from manholes in private gardens on the Saul Road, Downpatrick.
The South Down MP has received numerous complaints of similar issues in the area following heavy rainfall.
Mr Hazzard said: “I recently requested NI Water take urgent action following complaints of sewage coming from manholes in private gardens along the Saul Road, Downpatrick.
“NI Water have agreed to send out an engineer as a matter of urgency. Residents should not have to deal with issues of sewage in their gardens.
“This is an ongoing issue that residents have been facing at times of heavy rainfall and it needs to be rectified as soon as possible. This is a severe health and safety risk and poses a serious hazard to our community.
“I welcome a commitment from NI Water to conduct urgent further investigations on their pipes along the Saul Road to ascertain if there are any problems or blockages in the lines.
“Sinn Féin will continue to prioritise local improvements in the local waste-water infrastructure across South Down and confirm NI Water continues to invest time and resources in this area. It is essential that resources are made available from the Department in order to prevent any recurrences of sewage issues or any further harm to our constituents,” added Mr Hazzard.
