South Down MP Chris Hazzards attacks DUP record at the NI Assembly
Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP has blasted the DUP in a stinging rebuke to the resignation of Paul Givan as the north’s First Minister.
The South Down MP said: “This is utterly reckless and selfish behaviour from the DUP.
“It is little more than a stunt to help stave off a disastrous election in May following a series of demoralising opinion polls.
“At a time when we are slowly emerging from a global health pandemic, trying to transform our own local health system, tackle the rising costs of living, and rebuild our economy, the DUP have dangerously undermined the sustainability of our power sharing institutions at Stormont.
“It is disgraceful that a multi-year budget now can’t be passed by the Executive in order to invest in services such as cancer care, tackling waiting lists, and restoring frontline services in our local hospitals like Daisy Hill in Newry, and the Downe Hospital in Downpatrick.
“The public want to see us working together to prioritise bread and butter issues and improve the wellbeing of our people.
“This is a defining moment for our local political institutions in the north of Ireland. We can do so much better than this, however power-sharing can only work if those parties involved are committed to it.”
