The commonplace is the focus of a new exhibition opening in Ards Arts Centre next week (Wednesday 27 May 2015) demonstrating how the familiar can become unfamiliar through the two dimensional medium of painting.
The display introduces the contemporary work of artist Ashley Boreland, former Chief Executive of Ards Borough Council, whose painting style draws on, and is referenced by, many of the artistic movements of the twentieth century, both from Continental Europe and the British Isles. Vibrant colours are allied with the distortion of common-place objects to produce works that stand out from the usual.
Throughout a career that spanned almost forty years in the public sector, Ashley never lost the love of painting and, in recent years, he has found space to develop his view of the world through painting: “I am delighted to have my inaugural exhibition in Newtownards where I enjoyed working for so many years.
“I am also pleased that it will be a tribute to my late niece Judith Gillanders and that proceeds from any sales due to me will go to Cancer Focus NI which has agreed to support this event.”
The exhibition runs from 27 May – 27 June in the Georgian Gallery, Ards Arts Centre and admission is free.
