An emergency closure of the A2 Rostrevor Road, Warrenpoint, will start tomorrow at 8am until the 13 May.
The Rostrevor Road near St Leonard’s will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians during the closure which is necessary to undertake emergency repairs to the sea wall and to allow the installation of a new culvert .
Transport NI became aware of a deterioration in the condition of the sea wall over the Easter holidays and following inspection the carriageway was reduced to one lane under traffic signal control. The area of instability in the wall is immediately adjacent to a large culvert which was due to be upgraded later this year by Rivers Agency.
Transport NI and Rivers Agency have brought forward the replacement culvert works. They will be working together to complete the installation of a new reinforced concrete box culvert in the carriageway and the associated wall and protection structures.
The works are due to be completed by 5pm on Friday 13 May.
The closure is expected to cause significant disruption to traffic. All traffic will be diverted via the following routes:-
Diversion for east bound traffic – B7 Upper Dromore Road , B7 Bridge Road, B8 Hilltown Road, B25 Rostrevor Road and A2 Warrenpoint Road.
Diversion for west bound traffic – A2 Rostrevor Road, B25 Kilbroney Road, B8 Newry Road and B7 Chapel Road.
Variable message signs will be erected in Rostrevor, Hilltown and Warrenpoint to provide advance warning to motorists . Drivers are asked to observe the signage and plan their journeys appropriately
TransportNI aims to keep disruptions to a minimum however delays should be expected and drivers are asked to allow additional time when travelling in the area. As with all work of this nature, weather and tidal conditions can impact on the completion date. TransportNI thank drivers for their patience during the works.
