St Bronagh’s Primary School Rostrevor held an Eco-Schools information event for local schools on Wednesday 17 October 2018 which was organised as part of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s on-going environmental education programme.
Council Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Oksana McMahon was guest speaker at the event and paid tribute to the efforts of teachers in promoting environmental issues.
Councillor McMahon said, “I am delighted to be here today and to see so many schools interested in taking part in the Eco-Schools programme. I know that you are all aiming to fly the prestigious Green Flag outside your school. Today is an opportunity for you to get expert guidance to ensure your school can progress through the programme.
“At the end of every school year the Council hosts a civic reception to celebrate the schools which have obtained their flag. I hope that, come next June, your eco-committees will be celebrating your Green Flag status with us.”
“I would also like to mention both school principal John Gallagher and Eco-Schools Co-ordinator Una Downey who hosted today’s event. St Bronagh’s has recently acquired the title of ‘Ambassador Eco-School’ so this is a fitting location for holding an eco-schools information session.”
Una Downey, Eco-Schools Co-ordinator outlined their experience of participating in the programme and highlighted what St Bronagh’s plans and targets for the new school year to ensure that they continue on their eco-journey and obtain a further Green Flag.
Environmental Education Manager from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, Ruth Van Ry, provided information about the process involved in securing the coveted Green Flag status. She said: “We are delighted to have the support of Newry Mourne and Down District Council for the Eco-Schools programme. The continued high level of environmental performance by Eco-Schools in the area reflects the dedication of the schools and the Council in working together for a brighter future. St Bronagh’s Primary School is a positive example of what a school and its pupils can achieve and we are delighted they are one of our Ambassador Eco-Schools.”
The information event ended with an address by St Bronagh’s principal, John Gallagher, who thanked everyone for taking part and wished all the schools every success with their planned eco-activities for the year ahead.
