SDLP members have spoken out following recent improvement work to pavements in the Lower Square in Castlewellan.
Cllr Eamonn ONeill said: “We in the Castlewellan and Kilcoo Branch of the SDLP have been campaigning for many years to ensure the whole of Castlewellan is disability friendly. Over the years we have secured huge improvements to the town with the lowering of other kerbs and the erection of the traffic lights opposite St Malachy’s Church.
“One area that remained outstanding were the four corners of the Lower Square at Doyle’s Corner and King’s Inn. I am delighted that Roads Service has finally completed this last outstanding piece of work and has dropped these kerbs.”
Seán Rogers MLA added: “I too wish to welcome this work. This will be a huge benefit for those who are disabled, elderly and even parents with prams. “
Laura Devlin, the incoming SDLP councillor for the Newcastle area later in December when Cllr O’Neill steps down, said: “Since joining the Branch – 14 years ago issues such as these were raised and debated, and I am pleased that this work has taken place.”
And branch chairman John Duggan also expressed his delight saying: “These are the bread and butter issues that our Branch has been pursuing from the start and I am pleased that this work has taken place in advance of Eamonn stepping down from Council.”
