DOWN DISTRICT TO WELCOME THE PARALYMPIC FLAME
On Wednesday 22 August, Newcastle will once again be celebrating as it welcomes the creation of the Paralympic Flame in Down district.
A week ahead of the start of the 2012 Paralympic Games, one of four Flames will be lit on Slieve Donard, the highest peak of the Mourne Mountains. On the same day Flames will also be lit on the summits of the highest points in Scotland, England and Wales.
The public are invited to gather in Newcastle’s Donard Park from 11.30am to 2pm on Wednesday to welcome the Paralympic Flame where an illuminating mix of free family entertainment will be on offer plus the chance to be part of something truly memorable.
At the hub of the activity will be a U105 road-show hosted by John Daly who will be on hand with music, fun and games to entertain the public and to welcome the Paralympic Flame and its escort party.
Encouraging the public to lend their support by enjoying an afternoon in the beautiful surroundings of Donard Park, Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Mickey Coogan said: “I urge the whole community to join us, come out in force and welcome the Paralympic Flame on its return from the summit of Slieve Donard, and wish it well for the weekend’s torch relay around the UK.
“Let’s show our enthusiasm and support for the inspirational individuals who’ll be competing in the 2012 Paralympic Games.
“I’ll be looking forward to experiencing the same buzz that was in the air when the Olympic Torch Relay passed through the District back in June, but hopefully not the same wet weather!”
