Ballycran And Clonduff Draw In Senior Camogie Final
Ballycran 1-13 Clonduff 1-13
THE repeat of last year’s final promised to be a cracker and the large crowd at Castlewellan on Sunday were not to be disappointed. In the beautiful surroundings of St Malachy’s Park, Castlewellan, with the Mourne Mountains serving as a fitting backdrop, this game started at a tremendous pace. Ballycran county contingents, Catherine McGourty and Nicola Braniff, opened the scoring for Ballycran with a point each but Clonduff proceeded to settle down with Orla Gribben, Karen Gribben and Fionnuala Carr responding for the Hilltown side.

Amy McCarthy was causing all sorts of problems for the Clonduff defence and scored two beautiful points from play to again give Ballycran hope of causing an upset. Sara Louise Carr pointed for Clonduff followed by a point from Orla Gribben giving Clonduff a slender lead and following some great teamwork by Clonduff Sara Louise Carr fond the back of the net. Ballycran were not phased by this setback and two beautiful points from the sticks of Laura Hughes and Catherine McGourty left Clonduff leading by a single goal at half-time.
The second half saw an increased tempo from both sides and Ballycran drew first blood with a well taken score. Orla Gribben pointed again and Amy McCarthy pulled a further point back for Ballycran. It was tit for tat with points from Fionnuala Carr and Amy McCarthy while Nicola Braniff and Nicola Torney kept Ballycran well in the game.
The game see-sawed with points from Lorraine McGinn and Sara Louise Carr while Laura Hughes pointed for Ballycran. The game was later turned on its head when Ballycran netted through Nicola Braniff to leave the minimum between the teams. Clonduff responded in a stylish manner with points from Fionnuala Carr, Lisa McPolin and Paula Gribben.
Ahead by one point it looked like it was to be Clonduff’s day but a fantastic score from Ballycran’s Nicola Torney levelled things. Clonduff went on a final flurry and it looked like Sara Louise Carr had recorded the winning score but the ball went wide to end the match on a level footing.
