SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has offered her condolences to the family of a man whose body was discovered following a tragic fire at a farmhouse in Annaclone.
Ms Ritchie said: “The past few days have been very long and very difficult both for the Mathers family and for the community of Annaclone and Rathfriland. News of the fire devastated everyone in this close knit community and now the discovery of a body will focus that grief.
“I want to offer my deepest condolences to the Mathers family who have been through an agonising ordeal since Saturday. I know that local people will rally around the family and offer them their heartfelt support in the days and weeks ahead.
“I also want to pay tribute to the work of the Fire Service who tried to deal with the blaze under very challenging circumstances.”
Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has also expressed his sadness following the tragic death of young Brendan Allister. Cllr Clarke said: “This was a freak accident and it is really heart-breaking. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to his family, David, Roisin, Tara and Tiarnan, I believe that there is no pain more devastating and far reaching than losing your child.
“Brendan was the youngest of three children and was playing in his bedroom when the tragic accident, occurred. This is the safest place for a child to play in and for a freak accident to occur, it is heart-breaking. The family informed me that Brendan was a typical young boy, who loved playing outdoors on the farm and supporting Liverpool FC. As a parent and local representative, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy with the Allister and Murray families during this incredibly difficult time”.
