Sharvin welcomes Irish Street progress as No. 39 is finally demolished

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Downpatrick Councillor Gareth Sharvin has welcomed the progress of works at Downpatrick’s Irish Street and welcomed news that resurfacing will extend to the Down Arts Centre.

Downpatrick’s Irish Street improvement work is now progressing at pace says Cllr Gareth Sharvin. No. 39 has now been removed as it was a dangerous building and works can now proceed more quickly.

The Downpatrick area councillor has said: “The SDLP have been tireless in working to see the regeneration of our town centre which largely hinges on the project at Irish Street.

“This project is back on track and the dismantling of No.39 is now taking place at pace.

Cllr Gareth Sharvin is pleased with the progress now gathering pace in Irish Street.

“We must now ensure that the project continues on the current trajectory and that the revitalisation and regeneration of our town is visible.

Following continued representation on the matter, I am delighted to say that I have now received confirmation that following the dismantling of No.39 Irish Street, that the Department for Infrastructure will commence their resurfacing works of the area and have now committed funding to extend that resurfacing to the Down Arts Centre.

“It is hoped that this will begin in early October.

“With the works being undertaken at Church Street at present, this will complement the resurfacing of Irish Street and provide people with a fresh and dynamic entrance to our town.

“There have been some unfortunate disruptions as a result of these works, but I truly hope that this will only benefit the community in the long run.”

Cllr Sharvin added: “I want to assure the public that the revitalisation and regeneration of Downpatrick remains our key priority. This project is about the future, and we want that future to be a bright one which we can all benefit from.”
