Mourne’s Councillor Willie Clarke has called on people in Newcastle and visiting to look after the environment and not to let their dog foul the streets or for them to throw litter around.
The Sinn Féin Councillor said: “There is not an area of Newcastle that is not impacted by dog fouling. Sinn Féin activists have been out raising awareness in Newcastle to try and end this blight on our community.
“The idea behind the stencils is to encourage no littering and no dog fouling.
“It is also a reminder that spot fines are £80 if a person if seen to let their pooch mess the streetor pavement and if brought to court the fine can go up to £1000.
“Everyone with a dog must respect their community and clean up after your pet.”
Many visitors to Newcastle bring their family pets with them for the drive to Newcastle.
Given the hundreds of visitors to the seaside town each week, there has been an increase in the level of dog fouling and littering taking place.
