You meet hard working club members just about everywhere in the local area.
This scribe met one such person in Downpatrick at the weekend. We stood in an isle of a supermarket talking about all things club and the ups and downs we all experience. It’s neither all good nor all bad. On this occasion it was all about the good elements! We talked about the Under-12 boys footballers who secured the league title last week. The gentleman concerned was a very proud father of a playing member of that team. He was impressed with all the work being done with the lads. This is just one example of all the work being carried out by our team of coaches in football, hurling and camogie.
Hence there is no better way to kick off this week’s notes by congratulating the young lads and their coaches on a wonderful achievement following a win against Liatroim in Fontenoy Park. The game was nip and tuck from the first minute to the last. Both sides demonstrated why they occupied the top positions in the league table. The boys went in at half time two points down and then lost a man early in the second half. The boys didn’t give up and battled away to come out on top on a scoreline of 4:11 to 4:10. Well done to both sets of players. Scorers for the Town were Marty Steele 2:02, Sean O’Neill 1:03, Tiern Doran 1:01, TiernĂ¡n Connolly 0:03, Cormac Barr 0:01, Cormac McKibben 0:01.
* Last week our Under-17 Girls footballers hosted Ballymartin in a challenge match instead of a league game. Points were conceded, however, Ballymartin sportingly agreed to a game. This was of benefit to both teams. This allowed there to be an enjoyable, fun and skilful game of football. The Town girls worked hard together, clearly enjoying the game as they won the ball and passing well. It was a score line of 12-7 to 6-6 to the Town. Ballymartin had some great scores also. Such a scoreline highlights the potential these Town young ladies have and the need to ensure everyone attends games and training. Thank you to Ballymartin for travelling down and playing.
* There will be Kellogg’s CĂºl Camp registration next Sunday (17th) morning in the club between 10am to 11am.
* Good luck to Suzanne Barr and the Down Under-16 girls who will play Longford this Wednesday in the All-Ireland under 16 Semi Final in Dunleer. Suzanne, the coaching team and the young ladies have put in an awful of hard work and let’s just hope they get their rewards. The best of luck to you all.
* A reminder that Saturday morning juvenile coaching sessions have now ended for a four week summer break and will recommence again on Saturday July 30th.
*The Town remain at the top of the senior league despite a one point loss to near neighbours and rivals Bryansford last Tuesday night in St Patrick’s Park. As always a nip and tuck encounter with the game in the melting pot right to the end with a disallowed score at the death for the Town which would have drawn the game. The seniors now go into a two week break still topping the table. Next up will be Burren after the break.
* Last week’s lotto numbers were 3, 8, 9 & 20. There were no Jackpot winners and one £20 winner. This week’s jackpot will be £2,300.
