Café Créme In Newcastle Cooking Up Some Dough For MS Society

Jo-Ann Welby and the team at Café Crème in Newcastle are aiming to cook up some dough for the MS Society by getting involved in Cake Break.

The mouth-watering event is aiming to raise over £300,000 around the UK to support people living with multiple sclerosis (MS). The condition which attacks the central nervous system causes symptoms such as problems with mobility and balance, vision, dizziness and fatigue, to come and go or get steadily worse.

Jo-Ann, who works at the family run café on Main Street Newcastle, will be hosting a Cake Break for the first time this year from Friday 15-Sunday 17 May.

Jo-Ann said: “I’m really looking forward to hosting this Cake Break to raise funds for a charity close to my heart. My mum Jacquie was diagnosed with MS five years ago and it’s had a massive impact on her and our whole family. Sadly, we’ve witnessed our mum go from a fiercely independent, active lady to someone who needs full-time care.

“Like many people with MS, my mum’s MS is unpredictable and she’s struggling with many distressing symptoms like memory loss and pain. It’s had a big effect on our family and sadly there just isn’t enough support out there.

“I wish there was a wonder pill – something that could bring our old mum back but unfortunately there isn’t one. The money raised from our Cake Break will help the MS Society to fund research which gives us all hope for the future and hopefully an end to MS altogether”

“Getting involved in Cake Break is my way of showing my support to other people living with MS in Northern Ireland. We’ll be selling special MS cupcakes, collecting donations and organising a raffle with all proceeds going to the MS Society. I’d like to encourage everyone in the local community to pop in to Café Crème from Friday 15 – Sunday 17 May and show their support to the MS Society because that support will really make a difference to people living with MS”.

Samantha Creighton, Community Fundraiser at the MS Society said: “We’d love more people to take part in Cake Break. It’s a delicious way to fundraise for people affected by MS throughout Northern Ireland and provides a great opportunity for people to get together and spend quality time with friends and family. This year the money we raise will towards funding life-changing MS research; supporting our helpline and providing grants and short breaks for individuals and families affected by MS.”

The MS Society is the leading national charity for people with MS. In the UK more than 100,000 people are living with the condition. The cause is still unknown but most people start having symptom’s in their 20s and 30s and it affects almost three times as many women as men.
