Request for Newry Mourne and Down District Council to create more parking spaces in Saintfield pays off as glass bins to be removed says Alliance Councillor Patrick Brown.
Alliance councillor Patrick Brown is pleased to announce that following a continued campaign, he has successfully secured additional spaces in the car park on Downpatrick Street in Saintfield.
Cllr. Brown said: “Saintfield is a busy town which is growing in size and becoming increasingly popular with visitors. There have been ongoing issues around parking for some time, and often the main car park on Downpatrick Street becomes full to capacity during the day.
“Therefore, there is a real need for the extra spaces, which are being blocked by the large bottle banks.
“Since we are now able to put glass in the blue bins, the bottle banks in Saintfield have become redundant.
“Whilst these bins played an important role in encouraging recycling, as residents can dispose of glass in their personal bins, the community no longer sees the use or need for them to remain.
“I have been pushing for the removal of the bins for some time and have called for Council to refrain from renewing their contract with the bin providers, which they have since let expire. I welcome this decision, and look forward to the removal of the bins, which will happen over the next couple of months as part of a District wide scheme.
“I am sure the added parking facilities will be well received by local residents and those who frequent the shops and other amenities on the high street,” added Cllr Brown.
