Brown Looks For Solution To Strangford Road Flooding

Alliance MLA Patrick Brown Seeks Solutions for Flooding on Strangford Road in Downpatrick

Alliance MLA Patrick Brown and Cllr Cadogan Enright met with NI Water, Rivers Agency and local residents on the Strangford Road last week to address flooding concerns.

This area was among the hardest hit outside the town centre during the flooding that occurred in Downpatrick in November.

Many residents had expressed their concerns to Patrick Brown when they found themselves stranded in their homes due to the flooding.

Brown said: ‘This area is one of the lowest areas of Downpatrick, and therefore is prone to experiencing flooding during heavy rainfall.

“The meeting with NI Water and the Rivers Agency proved positive in achieving short and long term solutions to mitigate the flood risk.

“Ensuring the safety and security of our residents is paramount, and I will be following up with both agencies to ensure that effective measures are implemented to safeguard the local community.”

He added: “I have raised questions with the Minister for Infrastructure regarding flood defences and the potential dredging of the Quoile River.

“It’s imperative that we not only address the cleanup and protection of the Quoile but also prioritise the safety of our town and its residents against future flooding.

“I will be advocating strongly to Ministers for urgent action on addressing the flooding issues in Downpatrick.’

Cllr Cadogan Enright added: “I was pleased to meet with residents and relevant agencies to discuss the flooding issues on the Strangford Road.

“Since the flooding incident last year, Alliance has consistently prioritised flooding as a key issue.

“We’ve tabled motions at council meetings, including one on flood defences, and worked alongside Patrick to ensure that this matter receives attention at the Assembly level with Ministers.

“We remain committed to making flooding mitigation a top priority in Downpatrick.”
