During the month of November Murland’s Solicitors with offices in Downpatrick, Carryduff and Ballynahinch, will be undertaking their annual commitment to help a local charity – waiving their fee for the preparation of Wills, subject to a donation to being made to NICHS.
The decision to support NICHS came about due to the tragic loss of senior partner and highly respected member of the legal profession, Mr Barry Finlay. Sadly Barry’s life was cut short due to a heart attack following his return from holiday last year. Murland’s are keen to undertake this scheme in Barry’s memory to help people affected by heart disease and ultimately save lives right here in Northern Ireland.
The Practice hopes to raise around £2,000 through the scheme and all donations will go directly towards NICHS Heart Research Fund.
NICHS is committed to funding a series of pioneering local heart research projects including the development of a simple but effective eye test that can identify those at risk of a heart attack, yet show no symptoms – like Barry.
This piece of research is being funded by husband and wife team Professors Tara and Johnny Moore at Ulster University and the Cathedral Eye Clinic in Belfast. The research aims to show that blood vessels in the eye are a ‘window’ to the condition of blood vessels in other parts of the body.
Alan Reid of Murland’s Solictor’s said: “It is important to all of the team to do something positive in Barry’s memory and we are pleased that all funds raised will help find new ways of identifying people at risk of heart disease.”
Kerry Anderson, Director of Income Generation for NICHS, said: “We are just delighted to have Murland’s Solicitors choose to support us. This year we’re spending more than £300,000 on locally-based research into chest, heart and stroke illnesses.
“Four out of five of the projects we’re supporting are heart related. Although we have made huge advances in the treatment and prevention of heart disease, there are still too many people dying without any warning that they have it. Through your donations and our heart research we can save more lives”.
