Ballynahinch United 2 Dunmurry YM 2
United had their first home fixture for some three months during which time they had secured a vital away win against basement side Dundonald. Having lost 4-0 the previous week to the visitors an improved performance was required and that is exactly what the home supporters got writes Gilbert Cromie.
Dunmurry YM are a physically strong and experienced team and in the opening minutes laid siege to the United goal with goalkeeper Michael Vladeanu having to be at his best and taking some rough treatment which got the visitors striker a booking as early as the second minute.
United started to get more possession and in the 10th minute from a corner Ian McMullan stole in at the back post to head home. Minutes later a shot from Ross Murray fizzed across the goal and another effort deflected narrowly wide of a defender. On 20minutes United were 2 – 0 up thanks to a brilliant move which ended with Alan Patterson slamming the ball into the roof of the net.
Sadly United sat back and they became penned back into their own half and were unable to defend their lead from an aerial assault of long throws and corners. Valiant as the efforts of their defence of Brashaw, Davis, Fitzpatrick and Dickson was they could not keep Dunmurry out and the game was level at 2-2 before half time.
In the second United had the lion share of the possession and had chances to score through efforts from David Kelly, JD Davis and Ross Murray coming from the surging runs of Gavin Crawford and Alex Burtney.
This was a great performance from United against a team riding high in the 1B League table. Other results on the day meant that United climbed up the table a single point ahead of both Downshire YM and Dundonald. This Saturday they travel to Mossley YM and if they can repeat Saturday’s efforts there is no reason they can’t get at least a point.
