Kellie Armstrong MLA has welcomed the removal of intimidation points on social housing appiications

Alliance Housing spokesperson Kellie Armstrong MLA has welcomed the planned removal of intimidation points from social housing applications and the intent for a general review of the Primary Social Needs section of the application.

The announcement came during a Ministerial Statement delivered by the Communities Minister on 28 Jan 2025.

Kelly Armstrong MLA has welcomed the removal of intimidation points from social housing applications.

The Strangford MLA has said: “That we are at last able to move away from the measures that were made necessary during the Troubles is a clear indication of how far we’ve come in the process of peace-building here in Northern Ireland.

“Where the outworking of the intimidation points system could have meant a victim being removed from their home following a credible threat being made against them, there could now be the scope to take action against the perpetrator and ensure they are the ones to bear the burden for their behaviour.

“No form of abuse, violence, or intimidation is ever acceptable, regardless of source or motivation, and everybody deserves a safe place to call home.

“It is crucial all social housing applicants who are victims of abuse continue to be provided all the immediate help and support they need to secure appropriate accommodation.

“This is an encouraging development, demonstrative of the progress we’ve made as a post-conflict society. Alliance will continue to support positive, inclusive housing allocations based on need and ensuring equality of opportunity.”
