The Newcastle and District Amateur Football League,
Division 1 Supplementary Cup,
Saturday 8th April 2023 in The Meadow.
Final Score: Ardglass 11s 7 0 Ballynahinch United Swifts,
Ballynahinch Utd Swifts travelled to take on seasiders Ardglass Seconds in bright sunshine at the Meadow, but by half-time they had been blown away by a home side which were too strong in every department writes Cyril McKinney.
Karl O’Neill put the home side in front on 12 minutes with a clinical finish across the keeper from 12 yards after been sent clear in the right channel by a great ball from Martin Halpin.
Then on 18 minutes Matthew Rooney added a second from a long throw-in on the right wing from Armstrong which was nodded on by Magee and there was Rooney lurking at the back post to slot home from close range.
It got worse for the visitors on 22 minutes when the home side were awarded a penalty for a handball. Up stepped Martin Halpin and he made no mistake from the spot sending the keeper the wrong way.
Try as they might Ballynahich could not conjure up any clear cut opportunities despite the industry of Rodgers, Curry, Davidson and co.
As half time approached, Ardglass striker Mick Magee was left unmarked in front of goal and made it 4-0 to the home side heading home a cross from Clarke out on the right wing on 40 minutes.
Ardglass came out fast at the start of the second half and went further ahead on 49 minutes through Reuben Ashe who deservedly got his goal from the edge of the box with a right foot drive.
On 54 minutes it was 6-0 when Karl O’Neill got his second of the afternoon with a clinical finish after he was put through by Rooney with a deft flick.
O’Neill showed great composure and made no mistake and Ardglass by now were in cruise control and a minute later Mick Magee made it 7-0 with a tap in from another cross from Clarke on the right wing.
Ballynahinch to their credit kept playing their football but could not create anything of note in the final third and by now were finding it difficult to get out of their own half. Overall Ardglass were too strong in every department but credit to Ballynahinch Utd Swifts for not giving up.
