With a six week break in Division 4 action, last week all attention turned to the 2016 Centenary Cup which is Down County Board’s premier event to commemorate the 1916 Rising writes Michelle Taggert.
However, it would be hard to tell with the lack of PR to the Competitions launch and the fact that only 2 of the 4 scheduled fixtures were completed last Friday.
Nevertheless, Ardglass treated the Competition and opposition with the respect both deserved. Ardglass race into a 1-5 to 0-1 lead at the 20 minute mark thanks to 1-2 from Neill Teggart and two Daniel Smyth frees, however Dundrum struck back with a quick fire 2-1 before the break to leave it all square.
This meant that the second half was a real dog fight as both teams cancelled each other out; Ardglass took the lead only for Dundrum to pull head again, and the returning Ciaran Dorrian led from the front and scored two excellent points at vital times.
In the 59th minute with scores all square, Ardglass were awarded a 21 yard free, as Neill Teggart placed the ball down, he must have had a flashback to over a decade ago as he represented Northern Ireland U21s V Brazil at Windsor Park, he took one step back and curled the ball into the top corner despite the best efforts of the Dundrum net minder, it was a match winning goal that would not look out of place on the Cococabana beach never mind Dundrum Bay. Final score Dundrum 2-6 Ardglass 2-9. The seniors play their second game of the Centenary Cup this coming Friday at home to Newry Mitchell’s – throw-in @ 7.30pm.
This week the U14’s received their new strip from Basil Wills and his Daughter Julie Smyth on behalf of Ardglass Fish Sales last Monday, this is the second strip Basil and family have sponsored, having previously provided a strip for the U8s several years ago, the club are grateful that a local business man and former Juvenile player continues to provide much needed support for the club.
The new strip seemed to spark the U14’s in to life as they served up the best performance of the season as they totally dominated St John’s from start to finish last Monday evening, as early goals from Jamie McDarby, James Crangle and Ruairi Deegan killed the game as a contest, Ardglass unloaded the bench and the returning Conor Addis along with u12s Ryan Devlin, Gavin O’Shea and Dara O’Shea gave the management plenty of selection headaches for this week’s game.
The RESERVES travelled to Ballykinlar last Wednesday and needed a strong second half comeback to overcome a spirited and improving Kinlar side, Jordan Ross and Niall Cahir backboned the defence while several fine scores from Lee McEvoy and 1-3 from the diminutive Raymond Lundy saw Ardglass over line.
