Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle O’Neill has announced the appointment of a new Chair to the Livestock and Meat Commission.
Mr Gerard McGivern has been appointed as the new Chair and the appointment is effective from 7 November 2015 to 6 November 2018.
The Livestock and Meat Commission, which was established in 1967, has the general duty of assisting the development of the livestock (cattle and sheep) and livestock products sectors of the local agri-food industry. It provides a range of services to producers and meat traders including market intelligence and undertakes promotional activities. It also administers the Farm Quality Assurance Scheme and market support arrangements for beef and lamb in the north of Ireland (the latter as agent of the Rural Payments Agency).
Confirming the new appointment the Minister said: “Gerard McGivern has extensive experience of working collaboratively with many organisations. He has been involved in various marketing roles at a senior level throughout his career and therefore will be a positive addition to the board of the LMC.”
Minister O’Neill thanked outgoing Chairman, Mr Pat O’Rourke. She said: “I thank Pat for his valuable service and significant contribution to the work of the Board in his role as Chairman from 2009 to November 2015 and I wish him all the best for the future.”
Gerard McGivern is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Fellow of the Institute of Economic Development. He has been involved at a senior level in a number of district councils in various marketing roles including leading the formulation and delivery of the Mourne Mountains and Ring of Gullion Tourism Marketing Brand. He was also the founding Manager of Banbridge District Enterprises Ltd and has been involved in cross border initiatives. He declared no conflicts of interest and confirmed he has no issues with time commitment associated with the role.
The above appointment is based on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for NI requires the political activity of appointees to be published. The appointee does not hold any other public appointment and has not been involved in any political activity during the past five years.
The post attracta a remuneration of £17,315 per annum.
