McGrath Calls For End To Dublin Road Flooding

Colin McGrath MLA is calling on a resolution of flooding issues in the Dublin and Bann Roads at Castlewellan

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath has written to the Department for Infrastructure to request an assessment given increased numbers of road flooding in the area of the roundabout on the Dublin Road at Castlewellan.

Commenting, Mr McGrath said: “The issues at the Bann Road, and the localised road flooding which we are all familiar with have been outstanding for some time.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath is concerned at the flooding on the Bann Road and Dublin Road at the edge of Castlewellan. He will be asking the DfI Minister to take action on this issue.

“Time and again this issue is brought to the fore and there does not seem to be a resolution in sight.

“However, I have recently been made aware of additional localised flooding at the Dublin Road, which has been building up over the last year.

“This does create an issue particularly when cars are moving at high speeds, and perhaps don’t notice just how significant the localised flooding is.

“The result is that they either aqua-plane, or end up splashing the entrance of the shop, the staff and other customers. This is something that should not be allowed to continue.”

“While I have contacted DFI and requested that this be fully assessed for for remedial action, I think it is important that it is taken within the context of flooding at the Bann Road and to work out if these issues are linked.

“While I await an update from DFI on this, I will also raise the matter in the New Year with the Infrastructure Minister to address, and hopefully find a lasting solution for all those who have been impacted by this issue.”
