Lung cancer is not just a smokers’ disease – can affect everyone
The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust is using Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November to encourage everyone to be aware of the signs and symptoms of Lung Cancer.
Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist, Jenny Osborne, is urging people to challenge misconceptions about Lung Cancer and to act quickly if they notice any potential warning signs.
Jenny said: “Historically, Lung Cancer was always seen as a disease of smokers.
“However, the labels of ‘smoker’ and ‘non-smoker’ are not helpful, as they can distort the facts and lead to delays in diagnosis.
“Year on year, we are seeing an increase in younger patients being diagnosed with Lung Cancer who have never smoked.”
The symptoms of Lung Cancer are the same whether you are a smoker or a non-smoker.
These symptoms include:
- Persistent shortness of breath
- A cough lasting three weeks or more
- Coughing up blood
- Recurrent chest infections
- Increased fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Chest or shoulder pain
Jenny added: “If you experience any of these symptoms or are concerned about your health, it is really important to speak to your GP.
“Early diagnosis leads to better outcomes for lung cancer patients.
