Investment in mental health services must be prioritised says Mason
Sinn Fein MLA Cathy Mason is calling on the Department of Health to prioritise funding for addiction services across the North.
The South Down MLA said: “There is a lack of addiction services here in South Down.
“Speaking to representatives from the South Eastern Trust, I outlined my vision for a modern, fit for purpose addiction centre in Downpatrick that is equipped to deal with the crisis that is impacting so many across the constituency.
“Addiction from substance, drugs, alcohol and prescription medication is having an impact on more and more families across the island.
“In 2020, over 300 people died from alcohol-related illnesses in the North and the numbers of drug deaths have trebled in the last ten years.
“There is clearly a need for action.
“A significant additional investment of around £1.2 billion over 10 years is required in mental health services to implement the Mental Health Strategy.
“Sinn Féin have prioritised health. We are ready to invest £1 billion extra into our health service to recruit more doctors and nurses, tackle waiting lists and ensure you can see a GP when you need one.
“The DUP should get back to work and stop blocking an Executive being formed.
“I have contacted the Health Minister to raise these concerns and highlight the need for a centre of excellence for addiction in Downpatrick to support those who need it across our community,” said Cathy Mason.
