Ritchie Presses DARD Minister To Intervene On Pig Farmers Incomes

dn_screenSouth Down MP Margaret Ritchie has urged the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development to undertake investigations and negotiations to ensure pig prices in Northern Ireland are matched with those in Britain.

Ms Ritchie said: ‘”Last week the average price paid per kg in Northern Ireland was £1.32, whereas in Britain, the Standard Pig Price was £1.47/kg.

“This difference of 15p per kg is hugely detrimental to our farmers and must be brought into line with Britain to ease the strain on our pork farmers and allow them to become more competitive.

“I strongly encourage the DARD Minister to intervene in this issue to ensure that the income of pig farmers improves as a matter of priority.”
