Poet Damian Gorman is to read from his latest book at the Newcastle Community Cinema
Damian Gorman, a poet and playwright born and raised in Newcastle and now living in west Wales, is coming to Newcastle Community Cinema to present an evening of selected poems from his new collection, As If I Cared.
NCC spokesperson Lucy Royal-Dawson said: “Damian is on tour and is taking his one night off to come to Newcastle and has asked that money from ticket sales go to support Newcastle Community Cinema (NCC) as a charitable community group run by volunteers.
“NCC is bowled over by his generosity, particularly as it comes just as we are developing the community side of NCC’s activities.
“The cinema side of NCC is already well-established and the long closure due to COVID made us reflect on how we can bring more activities to the area beyond the medium of film. Now that NCC is open again, Damian Gorman’s evening just fits the bill.”
An evening of readings with Damian Gorman.
Damian Gorman is a poet and playwright born and reared in Newcastle, who now lives in west Wales. His selected poems and memoir AS IF I CARED is launched with a tour ending with an event in the Seamus Heaney Homeplace on Friday October 29.
This long-awaited publication has already enjoyed a limited release, and received a lavish welcome from readers and critics alike, being variously described as “beautiful”, “life-affirming”, “innovative”, and “hugely entertaining”.
His publishers, The JUNCTION in Derry, are pleased to announce that Damian has been asked to record 8 poems from AS IF I CARED for the National Poetry Archive in University College Dublin (UCD). He will read these as part of his evening at NCC, and will also read memoirs of his upbringing in Newcastle.
This is Damian’s night off on the tour and his books will be on sale afterwards, and he will stay to sign them for anyone who wants him to.
Renowned for his live poetry readings in Ireland and many other countries, Damian says that he returns for this rare reading in his hometown “with great pride, and a strong dose of trepidation”.
Damian’s work has garnered awards as diverse as a BETTER IRELAND AWARD, an MBE, a GOLDEN HARP and a BAFTA.
He is currently a Fellow of the Oxford Initiative for Global Ethics and Human Rights.
