Young Athletes Shine At First Firmus Energy Super Six Series Event

Record numbers of young athletes took part in the opening event of the 2016 firmus energy Super Six Series, held recently at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.

Organised by Lagan Valley Athletics Club, Northern Ireland’s largest athletic series is open to all young people aged eight and up.

Jack Ferguson of firmus energy, said: “We’re proud to be supporting the Super Six for the third year running and it was great to see so many people involved, despite the grey start to the day. 385 budding athletes attended the first session of the Series, which offers beginners an opportunity to try out new track and field events, while offering more serious competitors a chance to go up against other skilled athletes from across Northern Ireland. Thankfully the day brightened up for the events and we look forward to watching the Super Six grow further over the next five meets.”

Bryan McCorkell from Lagan Valley Athletics Club, added: “Our events take place in the evenings to allow as many children and students as possible to take part and this has proved popular over the years. Young people are divided into different age categories to take part in a variety of track and field sports, including the 100metre sprint, long jump, javelin and shot putt.

“We are delighted that our online registration process, which we made compulsory this year, made for much faster signing-in, which was much easier for competitors and organisers alike! 340 were already registered by the time they attended and those who weren’t have been asked to do so for future meets. We’re looking forward to welcoming more young athletes over the coming weeks and would particularly encourage anyone who wants to try new things to sign up now.

“This looks set to be the biggest year yet for the firmus energy Super Six Series and we are grateful for the wonderful support for the event from local families and athletes across the province.”

Registration for the next event in the firmus energy Super Six Series, which will take place on Thursday 28 April, is now open. Athletes hoping to take part are asked to sign-up by midnight on Tuesday 26 April.
