120 pupils from local schools and colleges took part in an entrepreneurial programme last week.
Priory Integrated College and Rockport School, Holywood; Nendrum College, Comber; Bangor Academy; Bangor Grammar and from South Eastern Regional College learned about entrepreneurship at a special event held at the SIGNAL Centre of Business Excellence in the Balloo Industrial Estate in Bangor on Friday 20 November to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week.

To celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week, pupils from local schools in North Down and Ards learned about entrepreneurship at a special event organised by SIGNAL Centre of Business Excellence.[/caption]
The event, which was organised by Ards and North Down Borough Council, taught pupils about the importance of entrepreneurship to the Ards and North Down economy. Local entrepreneur, Shredbank founder Philip Bain shared the story of his success. Leading business support agencies, Young Enterprise Northern Ireland, The Prince’s Trust and UnLtd were also on hand to provide information on the range of support available to young people wishing to start a business.
Students had the opportunity to compete in a mini ‘Dragon’s Den’ competition. They developed and pitched their business idea to a panel of industry experts and received feedback on their proposals.
Speaking about the event, Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Alan Graham, said: “Ards and North Down has a strong economy with many thriving local businesses. Today’s event was about passing on the importance of entrepreneurship for our local economy to the next generation. After hearing the range of innovative business ideas produced by the students I am confident that with the right support and encouragement many could develop and pursue a successful career in business”.
