Wild deer pose a danger of accidents on the coastal road around Bloody Bridge says Cllr Jill Truesdale
Jill Truesdale, Alliance Mournes Councillor, said she is delighted that Department of Infrastructure (DfI) have confirmed there will be extra deer signage erected along the road on the approach from Annalong to Shannagh-More Outdoor Centre after her request earlier in in May.
The DfI said they had assessed the location and found that signs could hel;p prevent unnecessary accidents by driver’s not being aware of the deer hazzards.
Cllr Truesdale said: “There have been a series of dreadful accidents along this road involving deer coming down from the forest and onto the road.
“It is extremely distressing and recovery along this particular road is difficult and again dangerous given the location.
“I would urge all drivers to take extra care along this stretch, from the Bloody Bridge down into Newcastle which is at times full of cars, people walking on the road and to residential properties.
“It’s a difficult part of the coastal road to work with given one side drops to the sea and the other runs along the base of the mountains and into thick trees.”
It seems that the deer population has been increasing in recent years and a fully grown stag could weigh as much as a horse.
