Cllr Conor Galbraith says solutions are needed to address Annacloy speeding
Downpatrick SDLP Councillor Conor Galbraith has said solutions are needed to address speeding through Annacloy.
He is seeking input from DFI and the PSNI to address the speeding issue.
Cllr Galbraith said: “The straight road towards Annacloy is notable for the high volume of traffic which moves along it.
“While traffic should be moving at 60mph and dropping down to 40mph within the set speed limit, very often we see this is not in fact the case.
“With rises and dips in this stretch of road, this really does compound the issue and creates a situation increasing the liklihood of accidents.
“It is evident that more solutions are needed to address the speeding along this route.
“Whether that is extending the 40mph zone, an electronic speed indicator device, or introducing additional speed checks, we need to see lasting solutions.
“These solution need to come from both the Department for Infrastructure and the PSNI.
“Working in silos simply doesn’t work and so we need to see a joined-up approach take place.
“As we move into the autumn and winter months the need to have safe routes is more important than ever.
“We know that these are key times for accidents given the fall in temperature and roads becoming more slippery.
“Therefore surely it makes sense to have speed reduction solutions in place before those months.
“This is what I would like to see our agencies give the proper consideration to.
“Therefore I am currently contacting our local DFI section office and PSNI team to request a multi-agency meeting to address the key concerns at Annacloy with the hope that we sort out this speeding issue once and for all.”
