Department for Communities commits to more investment in Warrenpoint Front Shore

The Department of Communities (DfC) has welcomed a further investment of £2.6 million in Warrenpoint to take forward a major public realm scheme in the Havelock Car Park area.

This scheme will tie in and enhance the recently completed £2 million Front Shore Scheme which has transformed the appearance of the shoreline. 

This new scheme will create more shared space and an area for people to walk along, relax in and enjoy the magnificent views of Carlingford Bay. 

A public realm scheme in Warrenpoint starting off-site in early 2024 will make the town more attractive to tourists and visitors.

Working in partnership with Newry Mourne and Down District Council, the latest project  will enrich this picturesque seaside town.

This investment of £2.6 million, of which Council is contributing £0.5 million, demonstrates the Department’s commitment to enhancing Warrenpoint as a destination.

Welcoming the news, Director of Regional Development (DfC) Gerard Murray said: “This new investment of £2.6 million will further sympathetically enhance the Front Shore area to complement the recently completed scheme along the Promenade.

“The improvements will make the area more welcoming, accessible and safe.

“It will contribute to the reimaging and revitalisation of the Front Shore to attract visitors and shoppers to the town centre.

“Also it will help create a positive experience for all those who live, work and visit the area.”

Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Cllr Valerie Harte, said: “This Public Realm Scheme represents the next stage of investment which builds on the recently finished Warrenpoint Front Shore project completed in June 2023.”

“This investment by the DfC is most welcome.

“It presents an opportunity to significantly improve the physical infrastructure of the Havelock Place and Osbourne Terrace Car Parks area, which are long overdue an upgrade.”

The scheme will see:

  • Improvements to the pedestrian pathways around the car park as well and resurfacing;
  • The cleaning, repointing and refurbishment of the boundary walls and railings;
  • Inclusion of speed bumps to manage traffic speed and flows;
  • Removal/cutting back of shrubbery and decluttering of footways; and
  • Increase in number of accessible parking spaces.

The scheme will be managed by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council with on-site works due to commence in January 2024.
