South Down MP Margaret Ritchie calls on the government to re-instate the Renewables Obligations. [/caption]
South Down MP Margaret Ritchie (SDLP) has pressed the British Government to reinstate the Renewables Obligation for existing renewable projects.
Ms Ritchie said: “The Government’s decision to scrap the Renewables Obligation has put renewable energy generation in jeopardy, particularly in rural communities. This is undermining rural economic growth and our efforts to tackle climate change.
“The damage has been particularly bad for new renewable projects that were relying on support from the Renewables Obligation to help them establish operations.
“It is my view that the Government should at the very least reinstate the Renewables Obligation for new projects that already have their contracts prepared and have the backing of their local communities.
“Sustainable and affordable electricity is an integral part of securing rural economic growth and the SDLP will continue working in Stormont and Westminster to ensure our rural communities get all the support they needs,” added Ms Ritchie.
