Investment in the green industry could also create high-tech jobs for suitably qualified people in South Down. “In our document ‘Partnership and Economic Recovery’, the SDLP outlined how the Green New Deal offers an excellent sustainable investment programme at this time of economic difficulty. “We are absolutely committed to this sustainability and job creation agenda and believe that, not only will it help tackle climate change, the measures proposed have the ability to help lift vulnerable people out of fuel poverty, and crucially provide opportunity for significant job creation,” said Councillor McKevitt. SDLP South Down Assembly candidate Karen McKevitt (39) is a councillor for the Crotlieve electoral ward of Newry and Mourne District Council having topped the poll in the 2005 local government elections. Born and raised in Newry, Karen now lives in Ballyholland with her husband Paddy and five children. Karen has previously been chair of the Newry and Mourne Council’s Planning Committee, District Development Committee, Building Control Committee and is currently the Deputy Mayor of Newry and Mourne. As a working mother, and wife of a tradesman, Karen wants to government to do more to help the beleaguered construction sector, embrace the Green New Deal, improve youth services for young people in South Down and maximise upon the hillwalking tourism potential of the Mournes.]]>
