Hamilton Launches Online Map Shop For Ordnance Survey NI

Finance Minister Simon Hamilton MLA today officially launched a new online map shop for Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland (OSNI).

dn_screenOSNI’s mapping data is amongst the most detailed and comprehensive in the world and the new online map shop means most of OSNI’s mapping products can be bought online.

The map shop will be of particular benefit to solicitors, architects, engineers and surveyors as well as outdoor activity groups and tourists. A full set of online historical maps, from as early as the 1830s, are in development and were also previewed at today’s launch.

Speaking to OSNI customers at the launch in Belfast, the Minister said: “OSNI’s new online map shop epitomizes the modern Ordnance Survey in Northern Ireland and reflects my aim to improve service delivery through the use of digital channels. Customers anywhere in the world and at any time are able to view, purchase and download OSNI’s extensive range of digital map products to their computers and tablets within minutes. This is OSNI’s shop window to the world.”

Previewing the historical mapping, the Minister added: “The site also enhances the availability of historical mapping. The first Ordnance Survey maps of the 1830s have recently been added and other maps will be developed over the coming months. This will provide an opportunity for anyone in the world to easily view and purchase maps of their ancestors’ home as it existed almost 200 years ago.”

“OSNI’s online map shop is another step towards reforming our public sector and providing innovative, high quality services which utilise modern technology.”

The new website, which was developed by LPS in partnership with nidirect and BT, is now hosted within nidirect, the official government website for Northern Ireland.
