Car noise in Donard Park is annoying residents says Cllr Willie Clarke

Newcastle Sinn Fein Councillor Willie Clarke has urged the Council, PSNI and PCSP to work collectively to resolve noise issues in Donard Park caused by an organised car meet.

Cllr Clarke said: “I have been contacted by residents living adjacent to Donard Park who are impacted by an organised car meet which was held at the weekend.

“The main problem is that Donard Park is surrounded by residential accommodation, and this includes many vulnerable people in residential homes.

“I would appeal to users of Donard Park to be aware that vulnerable residents live nearby and are living in fear with the activities that take place in Donard Park.

Newcastle Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has talked to a number of agencies to try and curb the noise impacts on residents around Donard Park in Newcastle.

“I acknowledge that the vast majority of users are law-abiding, wanting to show off their vehicles.

“However, there are a  sizeable number who were breaking the law. I would appeal to car meet organisers to realise the noise being created is unacceptable at this location.”

Cllr Clarke added: “Constructive meetings have taken place involving all relevant statutory bodies.

“I, along with other elected representatives, have made suggestions that would improve the management of Donard Park.

“This would include noise cameras and barriers which could be used to close sections of the car park as required.

“The car park is not designed for a car meeting venue, but is to accommodate visitors of the car park.

“People come to Newcastle to enjoy what Newcastle has to offer… great hospitality and quality food and drink, as well as our beaches and Mourne Mountains.

“It is essential that better management and policing of the car park is continually improved.

“I will continue to discuss this matter with Council officers how we continue to improve the management of Donard Car Park.”
