IN recent weeks across the UK there have been numerous floods and alerts as the heavy rain continues to batter the country.
Northern Ireland too has had its share of this difficult weather and Down District Councillor Carmel O’Boyle commented: “Following the severe flooding at South Promenade in Newcastle on Friday 15 December which was caused by the huge waves that crashed onto the road, a meeting is to be convened early in the New Year between Roads Service officers, Council officers, Newcastle Councillors and residents of South Promenade and King Street.
Newcastle Councillor Carmel O’Boyle said: “I walked to the area on Friday to see for myself the disruption that this event was causing, and I want to pay tribute to the Fire and Rescue Service and the PSNI for their prompt response to the incident. Once again local people were inconvenienced because of the weakness in the sea defences at this point in Newcastle. I have been in touch with the Roads Service and with some local people, and we are agreed that a meeting should be convened at the earliest opportunity in the New Year so that we might explore possible solutions to this problem.
“The meeting will be organised by our council officers and invitations will be sent to Roads Service, residents of King Street and South Promenade. I will also ensure that council officers and Newcastle councillors will also be in attendance and details of this meeting will be brought to the attention of the public though our local press. It is time that we all put our heads together in order to see what can be done with this issue.”
